Background:
U.S. Army veteran, served April 2005 to October 2006. Upon exit, enrolled in COS (College of the Sequoias) in Visalia, California, under the Montgomery GI bill, in January 2007. Became a member and officer (minutes) to Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society.
Came home to Spokane fall 2008 and enrolled in college courses at Eastern Washington university. Two majors declared: Psychology and Women and Gender Studies. Enrolled in School of Social Work masters program fall 2013. Withdrew from program spring 2014.
Clubs joined:
Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Society. Served as secretary winter 2010.
Psi Chi Honor Society for Psychology majors.
Fieldwork/Internship experience:
Odyssey Youth Center, February 2010 - March 2012. Activities: Facilitating LGBTQI youth ages 14-21. Assisted them in meal prep. Made referrals to other community resources, community involvement, general empowerment. Safe sex education, coping strategies, physical fitness, social awareness, as well as incorporating disabled youth. Networked with local high schools and assisted them with fledgling Gay Straight Alliance clubs. Highlights: traveled to Olympia, Washington's capitol, to talk to senators about needed amendments to the anti-bullying law. (Odyssey was instrumental in getting it passed).
Research:
Summer 2010 – began development on Zombie Feminism theory (what walks and talks like feminism, but really isn’t?), originally inspired from the movie Zombie Strippers. Presented research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Ithaca, New York, March 2011.
Fall 2010 – Began research in Dr. Mahlon Dalley’s peace psychology lab, involving cross cultural attitudes and beliefs regarding torture, force, government rights and citizen rights. Heavily based on Albert Bandura’s theory of Moral Disengagement, which addresses how people and governments justify acts of violence or infliction of pain. Comparing samples of college students from America and Botswana.
Winter 2011 - Ways of Knowing: Limited Reality, Expanded Truth philosophy research conducted to be presented at the EWU spring Research symposium, May 2011. Paper can be viewed here.
Work Related (paid) Experience:
Summer 2015 - Began working at a Veterans Affairs Memorial Hospital in its largest unit. Specialized in variety of levels of care and inpatient work including rehab, long term care, and hospice. Assisted with movement, meals, toileting, answered call lights, maintained accurate notes throughout shift, maintained accurate treatment records, communicated frequently with treatment team on patient condition and advocated for the patient to receive care on their terms. Lead nurse assistant team in bimonthly meetings to brainstorm solution-focused problem solving and team building.
Winter 2011 - Began work as psych nurse assistant within this county's only psychiatric residential facility. Passed medications, assessed mental and physical health, made referrals, weekly and daily updating of patients' charts and collaborated with outside agencies such as the Department of Corrections, Sacred Heart Medical Center, Frontier Behavioral Health, and Eastern State Hospital.
Community Integrated Services (CIS), September 2010 to June 2011. Provided in home support for comorbid developmentally disabled/mentally ill Community Protected (CP) clients. Those working within the Community Protection program are required to safeguard the community from developmentally disabled adults with violent/sexually deviant histories. All require assistance with meal prep, medication, hygiene, legal access, community access, and making sure CP guidelines as well as treatment plans are followed. Additionally, client progress in the treatment plan is followed and documented for CIS and the SOTPs (Sex Offender Treatment Providers).
Retail Lead, Goodwill Industries, July 2008 – December 2009. Managed store and product flow and working with those with disabilities and felony backgrounds in acquiring proficiency in job skills/employability.
